Join Us and Make a Big Difference this July

This year’s Conference will culminate, after three days of meetings, with the Diaspora Day of Service on Thursday, 27th of July. Jamaicans residing around the globe are invited to come home in July 2017 for one amazing day, to volunteer and share your skills, time and resources in community projects of your own choosing, anywhere in Jamaica. By participating you can play a role of the positive change you want to see in the lives and circumstances of your fellow Jamaicans at home.

Those registering for the Conference (and also those for whom the Conference is not their main focus) are being invited to develop or participate in projects in communities in Jamaica with which they have links. A special “Day of Service Sub-Committee,” will be monitoring these philanthropic efforts and supporting them with relevant information/advice or other assistance. The Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches, and a number of key agencies and Ministries including the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Jamaica Customs and the Social Development Commission will be key partners in the preparations.

The 2015 Day of Service programme in its second year was a great success. There were ten (10) organizations implementing seventeen (17) projects that impacted seven (7) parishes which represented a 140% increase in the number of projects executed at the previous conference in 2013. The ten organizations had a total of 109 Diaspora project members, as well as conference delegates and 106 local volunteers contributing to the day’s success.

No matter the distance, the Diaspora connection and their commitment to the island remains unquestionably strong. This is creditably demonstrated at every Diaspora Conference since the first in 2004, and especially at the last one in 2015. Not only do Jamaicans abroad want to invest in their homeland, and establish business links but many have and many more would like to give back freely to the Jamaica that made them into the proud, strong people who have prospered abroad.

The 2017 Conference continues to make this philanthropic commitment a major focus, along with encouraging business linkages and other socio economic and development priority areas.

PLEASE REGISTER FOR THE DAY OF SERVICE

All individuals and groups who are planning to participate are being asked to download and fill out THIS FORM so we can effectively plan for your participation. Please return your completed form to dca@mfaft.gov.jm and ddosjamaica@gmail.com

Participating as an Individual or Group:

Individuals or Groups who wish to carry out a service project are asked to note that they themselves are expected to make the links, develop the plans and implement their project with their own resources, energy and expertise. Limited assistance MAY be provided, if requested on the Registration Form before the deadline ( June 30, 2017).

Participating as an Individual Volunteer:

Individuals who are not part of a group or organization, but would like to volunteer with an existing project, are encouraged to register (using this same Registration Form). An attempt will be made to link them with project groups, although accepting additional group members will of course have to be decided by the groups themselves. Feedback will be given as early as possible.

Location of Service Projects:

Projects can be located anywhere in Jamaica, but groups need to bear the travelling logistics and cost in mind.
Projects can extend beyond the one-day if so desired. Shuttling project members to projects in and around Kingston & St Andrew MAY be facilitated IF registration documents are received no later than June 16, 2017. Note, that volunteers or other assistance requested may not be available beyond July 27, the Day of Service.

Importing Items –Very Important:

If you are bringing into the country, materials or equipment to use for the projects, these are best brought in as accompanied or un-accompanied baggage, rather than as separate shipments which can take too much time to process and clear. Guidance regarding shipping items and customs waivers, accompanied and unaccompanied baggage, and other information, will be provided as required by each group.
