Foreign Trade is a component of Jamaica’s Foreign Policy. It involves commercial diplomacy and utilizes the mechanisms and procedures of the Foreign Service. The Foreign Trade Portfolio was merged with External Affairs in the 1970s to form what is now the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Consequently, Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade are inextricably linked.

The Foreign Trade Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, comprising the Office of the Under Secretary, the Foreign Trade Department and the Trade Agreements Implementation and Coordination Unit (TAICU), have responsibility for the formulation of foreign trade policy and for trade negotiations and represents the interest of the country at the bilateral, regional and multilateral levels. The objective is to ensure that Jamaica maintains and secures access to the markets of its trading partners under the most favourable conditions and to seek new market opportunities for Jamaican exporters.

In addition, the work of the Foreign Trade Division involves coordinating the implementation of the WTO Agreements, the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), for which it is the focal point, and other bilateral trade arrangements.
