MINISTER JOHNSON SMITH ANNOUNCES NEW AMBASSADOR TO BRAZIL

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade announces the appointment of Mrs. Sharon Miller as Ambassador-designate to Brazil.

Mrs. Miller, who has 35 years of experience in the Jamaican Foreign Service, is currently the Director of the Economic Affairs Department at the Foreign Ministry and a member of the Permanent Mission to the International Seabed Authority, headquartered in Kingston. She served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Jamaican Embassy in Washington DC, with concurrent accreditation to the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the Organization of American States (OAS). She also served previously as Deputy High Commissioner at the Jamaican High Commission in Ottawa, Canada.

“Mrs. Miller’s vast experience and expertise in bilateral and multilateral negotiations, including economic and sustainable developmental matters, are important assets for our top diplomat in Brazil, and the other countries to which the Brazil mission is accredited, and with which we are pursuing deeper bilateral ties, especially in trade, tourism and investment,” said Minister Johnson Smith.

The Ambassador-designate, who has represented Jamaica in numerous international fora, has also sat on various national boards and committees including, the Bilateral Investment Treaty Negotiations Committee; the National Council on Ocean and Coastal Zone Management; Maritime Delimitation Negotiations Committee; National Working Group on International Migration and Development; the National Oversight Committee for Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Steering Committee for the National Investment Policy.

She counts amongst her most recent accomplishments her role as lead Negotiator for the concluding Round of the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin America and the Caribbean (Principle 10), in San Jose, Costa Rica, in March.

Mrs. Miller holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Public Administration and has done graduate work in development studies. She is married with two children, loves the performing arts and music. She is to assume duties in Brasilia in June 2018
