Travelling Overseas

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade reminds Jamaican nationals travelling abroad of their right to be treated in a manner which is respectful of their basic human rights and freedoms, which include the right to be treated humanely in custody. It should be noted that even if a Jamaican is accused of breaking the law in the country being visited, he or she still has the right to be treated with dignity and be accorded basic human rights under the constitution of the country in question as well as in accordance with established international human rights principles.

Any illegal action on the part of official representatives of the country being visited which contravenes these rights should always be reported to the police authorities in that country and a written police report secured. This will assist in future efforts to investigate the complaint.

Jamaican nationals travelling abroad who feel that their rights have been violated by the authorities of the state being visited should make a complaint to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

The public is reminded that the Government of Jamaica can only make appropriate representation to foreign governments on behalf of affected Jamaicans if the necessary information is made available.

All complaints will be treated confidentially and with discretion.
