“It is important that Jamaica and Canada maintain dialogue on the new and emerging challenges facing our countries, at the national, hemispheric and global levels,” Ambassador Marcia Gilbert Roberts, Permanent Secretary, MFAFT, underscored the necessity of the inaugural mid-point review of the 6th Jamaica/Canada Bilateral Consultations, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade (MFAFT) in New Kingston.

It is expected that by the end of the one-day review, both countries would have agreed on the goals, necessary steps and specific timeframes needed for further progress in bilateral cooperation in the following areas: security and defence; justice; sports and culture; economic and commercial ties and labour and skills development.

Both countries will also continue dialogue on regional, hemispheric and multilateral issues, including the implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and issues of interest particularly for Small Island Development Sates (SIDS), such as climate resilience.

This morning (March 25), Minister of State with responsibility for Diaspora Affairs, Pearnel Charles Jr, had a one-on-one [discussion] with Mark Milward, host of the Diaspora Show.

Minister Charles Jr. responded to questions about the upcoming Jamaica Diaspora Conference, scheduled for June 16–20, as well as other diaspora-related matters.

On Monday, March 25, Sen. the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith met with the new Assistant Deputy Minister of the America's, Global Affairs Canada, Michael Grant.

Mr Grant engaged the Minister on mutual issues of interest including climate resilience and education. He also used the occasion to propose that both countries improve their scope of cooperation in the areas of investment and bilateral trade.
