After being exiled in Jamaica for nearly a decade, Gretel Gocan, who is part of the “Windrush Generation”, became the first Jamaican to return to the United Kingdom. Her return on May 3 was an emotional affair.
Born in 1937, Mrs. Gocan was refused re- entry to the United Kingdom due to incorrect documentation after attending a funeral in 2009.
Minister of Foreign affairs and Foreign Trade Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith has welcome the confirmation of Mrs. Gocan’s return to her family, following this heartbreaking ordeal.
“We are pleased that the process is working and we continue to coordinate our efforts with the British High Commission and Jamaica’s High Commission in London through the Home Office to assist and support the processing of other undocumented individuals,” she said.
Additionally, the Foreign Minister stated that an advert has been published in the two main Jamaican newspapers, on social media and the Ministry’s website, inviting affected individuals who lived and worked in the United Kingdom between 1973-1988 to contact the Consular Affairs Department for guidance.
The Ministry has also developed a list of names of potential Windrush cases that have been brought to attention and has referred them to the British High Commission for follow-up. The Ministry will continue to actively monitor this immigration crisis, as it unfolds.
