JAMAICA TO HOLD POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS WITH THE KINGDOM OF SPAIN

Jamaica and Spain are set to engage in political discourse in Spain’s capital Madrid from May 17th to 18th.. The two day meeting is intended to facilitate the strengthening of bilateral, regional and multilateral relations to include areas of: trade and investment, tourism, energy, agriculture, logistics and education.

Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Tradeis expected to engage her counterparts on matters related to the upcoming high level meetings particularly, ACP-EU Post Cotonou negotiations, EU-CELAC, and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

It is also expected that Minister Johnson Smith will sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain.

Bilateral cooperation between Jamaica and Spain has strengthened significantly over the past decade. Spain has increasingly become a leading source of Foreign Direct Investment in Jamaica. Spanish investment of US$1.7 billion in Jamaica’s tourism industry is in evidence in the 14 hotel and wellness centre construction projects undertaken by Spanish companies across the island.
