Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith departed the island on Wednesday, May 10 to join other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Trade Ministers at the 44th Meeting of the CARICOM Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED), slated for May 11-12 in Georgetown, Guyana.

The two-day meeting will consider and take decisions on regional trade and economic agenda items.

The continued review of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), as mandated by CARICOM Heads of Government at their meeting in July 2016, will be a key agenda item. The Ministerial Meeting will look at timelines for the implementation of aspects of the CSME, including the facilitation of travel, movement of skills, private sector facilitation and the movement of goods and services.

The Council will also discuss the future of CARICOM’s external trade policy and strategy, as well as trade with the United Kingdom in the post-Brexit era.
Minister Johnson Smith will lead a delegation comprising trade representatives from the Foreign Ministry, as well as the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, Agriculture and Fisheries.
Following COTED, the Minister will also attend the 20th Meeting of the Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR) from May 18-19 in Barbados.
