Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, has announced the appointment of Ambassador Cheryl Spencer as the new Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) and its Specialized Agencies in Geneva, Switzerland.

Ambassador Spencer, who succeeds Ambassador Wayne McCook, assumed duty in late February after recently completing her tour of duty as Jamaican High Commissioner to South Africa and other countries in Southern Africa.

A career diplomat, with over two decades in the Foreign Service, Ambassador Spencer’s posting prior to Geneva and South Africa includes the Jamaican High Commission in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, where she served as the Deputy High Commissioner.

This will not be Ambassador Spencer’s first posting to Geneva as she has previously served as the Deputy Permanent Representative of Jamaica to theUN in Geneva and its Specialized Agencies.

Her predecessor, Ambassador Wayne McCook resumed duties at the Foreign Ministry in Jamaica in February in the position of Undersecretary Multilateral Affairs Division. He will take up the position of Senior Advisor in the office of the Director General (DG) of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in April 2018.
