A toast to Spain

Caption: On Thursday, October 12, Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Hon. Alando Terrelonge, attended a reception to commemorate the National Day of Spain.

While representing Foreign Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, who attended the 13th High-Level Forum on the Korea-Caribbean Partnership, Minister Terrelonge expressed appreciation to the Government of Spain for its efforts to advance cooperation in #Spanish language training in the education and tourism sectors – two areas critical to Jamaica’s socio-economic growth and development.

“It has long been the thrust of the Government of Jamaica to make Spanish a credible second language. We intend to continue to make this a reality by capitalising on our geographical location, as well as on the opportunities which the Government of Spain has provided through Spanish language education cooperation”, he said.

The Minister further pointed to the Spanish-Jamaica Foundation’s (SJF) role in undertaking cultural, environmental, community development and sports projects in Jamaica, which he described as “sterling contribution” in the promotion of Spanish language education at the primary, secondary and tertiary levels.

Jamaica and Spain established diplomatic relations in December 1966. Bilateral relations between both countries have strengthened significantly over the past decade. The countries cooperate in the areas of education (particularly the promotion of Spanish language training), sport, agriculture and health.
