Career diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Esmond Reid, has been appointed as Jamaica’s High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith made the announcement on Tuesday, January 22.

Mr. Reid succeeds outgoing High Commissioner L. Ann Scott, who has returned to the Ministry’s Headquarters. He will also serve as non-resident Ambassador to other countries in Africa.

In welcoming Reid’s appointment, Minister Johnson Smith noted that “He has led an outstanding career in the Foreign Service over the last 28 years, with a proven track record in foreign trade policy development and negotiation as well as investment promotion. I am confident that he will continue to conduct the Government of Jamaica’s business with distinction.”

Mr. Reid is an International Relations and International Business Specialist with a wealth of experience in multilateral and bilateral diplomacy and trade relations. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of the Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC).

The High Commissioner-designate is currently assigned as Under-Secretary in the Foreign Trade Division. He also served previously in various capacities in the Ministry, as well as Jamaica’s diplomatic missions in London, Bonn, Berlin, Brussels and latterly in Geneva, where he played an integral role in the negotiation and conclusion of the landmark Trade Facilitation Agreement, within the World Trade Organization (WTO).

In reacting to his appointment Reid said, “I am honoured to be asked to represent Jamaica in this new capacity and I am committed to pursuing all opportunities to enhance cooperation at different levels, between Jamaica and the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

He is expected to take up his duties in Abuja by March 2019.
