This donation from the Chinese to Jamaica forms part of the international response and support to the Government’s ongoing recovery and restoration initiatives, following the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 3.

In a gesture of international solidarity, the Government of the People’s Republic of China has donated more than $7.5 million (US$50,000) to support Jamaica’s recovery efforts following the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 3.

The donation was formally presented on Tuesday (July 16) to Foreign Minister Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith by His Excellency Chen Daojiang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the island.

During a brief handover ceremony at the Foreign Ministry, Minister Johnson Smith expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica. She acknowledged the long-standing and robust friendship shared between the two countries, which has been thriving since the establishment of diplomatic relations more than five decades ago.

“This timely contribution from the People’s Republic of China, which forms part of the international response and support to the Government’s ongoing recovery and restoration initiatives, is very much welcomed. It reflects the vibrant friendship between Jamaica and the People’s Republic of China which we have enjoyed for over 50 years, since our establishment of diplomatic relations in 1972”, the Foreign Minister said.

Minister Johnson Smith said farming communities, particularly those along the southern coast of the island, have suffered significant setbacks because of hurricane Beryl. She noted that the hurricane’s torrential rains and strong winds have left many roads and communities in disrepair, which underscores the urgent need for rebuilding efforts. The Minister also pointed out the broader implications of climate change on Small Island Developing States like Jamaica, calling for urgent and decisive international action in helping to build climate resilience.

The donation from the Chinese is part of the welcomed international response and support to the Government’s ongoing recovery and restoration initiatives.
