Data Protection Bill debated in Senate

Data Protection Bill debated in Senate – During her Senate presentation on June 5, Johnson Smith underscored the significance of the Data Protection Bill noting that it, “will play a critical role in the protection of privacy of personal data.” She also noted that although the Jamaican Constitution was amended in 2011 to provide for a New Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, including the “respect for and the protection of: private and family life; privacy of property and of communication,” simply providing for and protecting privacy in a Constitution is not sufficient to safeguard such a right, hence the need for legislation to further address the protection of personal data.
