Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, leaves the island on the weekend for Santiago, Chile to participate in meetings geared towards fine-tuning the cooperation agenda for the period 2019 to 2021 between the People’s Republic of China and the thirty-three member Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
The Second Ministerial Meeting of the China-CELAC Forum, under the theme CELAC-China: Working for more development, innovation and cooperation for our peoples – A Shared Future – the Belt and Road, will be chaired by the President Pro Tempore of CELAC, H.E. Hugo Martinez, Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador. Among the areas to be explored for cooperation with China are: agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, the environment and climate change.
Prior to the Forum, Minister Johnson Smith will participate in a meeting of the China-Caribbean Foreign Ministers Group, chaired by H.E. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of China to discuss Chinese investments in the sub-region.
It is also expected that Minister Johnson Smith will have bilateral discussions with Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the margins of the China-CELAC Forum, on a range of issues in relation to the government’s economic and development priorities.
Minister Johnson Smith will also participate in the Extraordinary Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs of CELAC, as well as the Third Meeting of the Lima Group, which has been monitoring developments in Venezuela. Whilst Jamaica is not a member of the Lima Group, it continues to maintain a presence at its deliberations.
Minister Johnson Smith will be accompanied by officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
