Foreign Minister, Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith says the Government remains resolute in its commitment to combat the threats posed to international, regional and domestic peace and stability by acts of terrorism.
“In this globalized world with seamless borders, no State is immune to this pervasive threat. As such, it is imperative that we participate in the collective and concerted efforts to address the root causes of violent extremism and radicalization that drive these malicious acts,” said Senator Johnson Smith.
She was speaking at the opening ceremony for meetings of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) at the Ministry’s Headquarters on Tuesday, March 28.
The Foreign Minister underscored that Jamaica continues to bolster its defences against threats to national security, including terrorist attacks. In this regard, she noted the work of the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Division (CTOC),a dedicated unit in the Jamaica Constabulary Force, was established in 2015 to effectively combat terrorism and organized crime in all its forms. In addition, she noted that the Government is in the process of developing a national Counter-Terrorism Strategy.
“It is our aim to complete that process as soon as possible in order to ensure more focused implementation of national counter-terrorism efforts. These strategic measures are testament to the commitment of the Government of Jamaica to respond to the rapidly changing global environment and the challenges confronted in strengthening our country’s security framework,” the Minister affirmed.
The CTED is in the island from March 28-30 to focus on Jamaica’s implementation of several United Nations Security Council (UNSCR) resolutions and also to receive an update on action taken to address the findings of the 2008 mission.
