The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade has noted with concern that false information is being circulated among the Diaspora, stating that the Government of Jamaica has passed a bill to levy a monthly charge on accounts that have been inactive for 15 years or more and that the Government is also closing these accounts. The foreign ministry endorses the stance of the Ministry of Finance and Public Service (MOFPS) that such allegations are not only a misrepresentation of the Government’s legislative actions regarding banking, but are also malicious.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is therefore seeking to reassure members of the Diaspora and provide them with correct information by sharing a release issued by the MOFPS on this issue. For emphasis, we reiterate to Jamaicans within the Diaspora, that the Government of Jamaica has not taken the actions being alleged in misinformation being circulated via Whatsapp and various social media platforms. We also kindly ask for your assistance in sharing this message to your friends and family who might also have received the misinformation.
