The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will welcome 24 non-resident High Commissioners and Ambassadors, who will join their resident counterparts in Kingston, Jamaica for the Ministry’s flagship event, Diplomatic Week, slated for Sunday, February 5 to Friday, February 10.
Under the theme “Growth through Partnerships”, diplomats will be exposed to political, economic, cultural and social developments in Jamaica, to create new opportunities for strengthened engagement.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith stated, “Increasing dialogue with our bilateral partners is critical to our economic growth agenda. In an ever-changing global environment, it is important for us to signal to our partners that Jamaica stands ready to collaborate with them to achieve our shared objectives.”
Eight new Ambassadors-designate from Bangladesh, Finland, Ireland, Morocco, The Netherlands, Sudan, Sweden and Switzerland, will present copies of their Letters of Credence, accrediting them to Jamaica as representatives of their respective countries, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. Thereafter, they will present the originals to the Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen.
During the course of the week, Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Andrew Holness, and other Government Ministers will address the Diplomatic Corps on the Government’s policies and national priorities for bilateral engagement, as well as key areas within their respective portfolios. JAMPRO, the Government’s trade and investment agency, is also scheduled to make a presentation.
Jamaica’s music and dance will also be on show as Ibo Cooper, Karen Smith and the Tivoli Dance Troupe will grace the reception hosted by Minister Johnson Smith at the historical Devon House on Monday – which, fittingly, is the birthday of Bob Marley.
The highlight of the week – the Diplomatic Dinner – will be hosted on Thursday by Their Excellencies, the Governor-General and Lady Allen at King’s House.
In addition to the diplomats with Missions located in Kingston and the eight Ambassadors-designate, non-resident High Commissioners and Ambassadors from The Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Botswana, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Guinea, Hungary, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Mali, Mozambique, New Zealand, Qatar and Sierra Leone will participate in the week of activities.
