Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade dialogues with Mr. Juan Manuel Bonet Planes, Director of Cervantes institute during her recent meeting at the institute.
Jamaica and Spain will be entering a partnership agreement for the Spanish language to be taught to hundreds of Jamaicans in the education and tourism sector. This will support the vision of Jamaican government to strengthen Jamaica’s participation in the region and globally.
In an official visit to Spain, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade met with the Director of Cervantes Institute, Juan Manuel Bonet Planes and senior members of his team, to finalize plans for the roll-out of this project.
This first exercise will be launched from August 18th to 21st of this year under the direction of the Cervantes Institute, a non-profit government organization that promotes the teaching of the Spanish language and the dissemination of the Spanish culture.
It is expected that representatives from the Institute will visit Jamaica soon to undertake this academic mission which will result in the training of one hundred (100) Teachers and two hundred (200) Tourism workers.
Discussions were also pursued regarding the organization’s assistance in developing a policy framework for the teaching of Spanish in schools in Jamaica. Currently, students are taught under a general language policy.
