From February 4 to August 2, Jamaicans island-wide will have the chance to be more acquainted with the work of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Jamaica OAS partnership. This following the launch of the OAS traveling exhibition, which will commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the organisation and showcase various partnership projects, during the 50 years, since Jamaica ratified the OAS Charter.
The traveling exhibition, which will begin in St. Ann and commence in St. Mary, will be housed in libraries and schools, including tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the launch, at the National Library of Jamaica, downtown, on Monday, January 25, Ambassador Nestor Mendez, Assistant Secretary General of the OAS stated that the traveling exhibition “will help to spread the organization’s message of peace and solidarity.”
Noting that a unified hemisphere was first expressed by Simon Bolivar when he penned the Letter of Jamaica, whilst here some 200 years ago, Ambassador Mendez made the point that the OAS is the world’s oldest regional organisation.
Senator the Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr. Minister of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade welcomed the exhibition, as he lauded the OAS for the “work accomplished over the past 70 years, under the four main pillars of Democracy, Human Rights, Diplomacy and Development.”
In addition to tertiary level training and institution building projects, Minister Charles noted that Jamaica from 2016-2017 received over US$2.73 million form the OAS, channelled through more than sixteen projects namely in the security, education and training sectors.” He also thanked the OAS for their US$500,000 commitment, aimed at strengthening “National efforts to build resilience of Caribbean Small and Medium Tourism Enterprises (SMTEs).
Noting that Jamaica also shared its expertise in civil registry, security and public sector reform with the OAS, the Foreign State Minister also described the OAS as “an essential facilitator on our growth agenda” and “our journey toward achieving the Vision 2030 objectives.
