NEW YORK – The Government of Jamaica and the Government of the Republic of Palau formalized the establishment of Diplomatic Relations during a Signing Ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations on Thursday, April 28, 2022.
The historic ceremony was the third of its kind to be held this week, in the presence of Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, on the final day of her Working Visit to New York for the UN ECOSOC Financing for Development Forum.
The Permanent Representatives of Jamaica and the Republic of Palau to the United Nations, His Excellency Mr. Brian Wallace and Her Excellency H.E. Ms. Ilana Seid, signed the Joint Communiqué establishing Diplomatic Relations between the two countries, respectively.
The Government of Jamaica and the Republic of Palau are valued partners at the multilateral levels, and will now deepen their bilateral partnership, having formalized diplomatic relations. This is consistent with the Government’s approach to strengthen ties with non-traditional partners to enhance external cooperation, including through trade and investment.
During the discussions, Minister Johnson Smith and the Palau Ambassador noted the scope for collaboration between Jamaica and Palau on matters pertaining to the law of the sea, given the inherent similarities and challenges shared between the two small island nations. They noted that the sustainable development and protection of our seas and oceans are crucial if small islands such as Jamaica and Palau are to attain their development goals. They further agreed to the value of the multilateral process in achieving this shared objective.
Both Jamaica and Palau have expressed hope that the newly established diplomatic channels will bolster existing efforts to advance mutually beneficial relations between the two countries.
