The Jamaica National Children’s Home in Papine, St Andrew has received a “gift of hope” in the amount of one thousand US dollars ($USD1000), from the Jamaican Diaspora in Japan as contribution towards the rebuilding process of the state–care facility which was ravaged by fire in August 2019.
The cheque which was handed over by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith to Director of the Jamaica National Children’s Home, Ms. Nadeen Waugh, represent proceeds raised from charitable activities coordinated by the Jamaican Embassy in Japan.
Speaking at the hand-over ceremony, Johnson Smith said that, “the Jamaican community overseas is delighted to assist the less fortunate and in particular the children who reside at the Home.”
Ms. Waugh, in her response, expressed gratitude for the donation on behalf of the Jamaica National Children’s’ Home, the Methodist Church in Jamaica and the children. She noted that, “the contribution comes at a time when we are recovering from a great disaster and it warms our heart and gives us hope that the rebuilding will take place and we will go back to our normal modus operandi of care and protection.”
The Jamaica National Children’s Home opened in 1973 as a branch of Britain’s National Children’s Home. The facility was home to seventy one children including those with disabilities during the time of the blaze.
