Jamaican Embassy in Cuba held a reception to celebrate Jamaica’s 61st Independence

In attendance were: H. E. Fernando Rojas, Acting  Culture Minister in the Cuban Govt. & H. E. Josephina de la Caridad Vidal, Foreign Affairs Vice Minister.

National Day Reception

His Excellency Franz Hall, Ambassador of Jamaica to Cuba, hosted a reception on Thursday, 3rd August 2023 at the Official Residence, in celebration of Jamaica’s 61St Anniversary of Independence. This was the first reception being hosted by the Embassy in over ten (10) years.

The Government of Cuba was represented by His Excellency Fernando Rojas, Acting Minister of Culture and he was accompanied by Her Excellency Josephina de la Caridad Vidal Ferreiro, Vice Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador Gustavo Veliz Olivares, Director of Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean, Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In keeping with the theme Jamaica 61 – Proud and Strong, the Ambassador highlighted the indelible impact that Jamaica has had in various fields, in particular culture and sports. Mention was made of the historic success of the Reggae Girlz in qualifying for the knock out round of the FIFA Women’s world Cup and the stellar performance of the Sunshine Girls in South Africa at the Netball World Cup.

The opportunity was used to express gratitude to the Government for its vibrant technical cooperation programmme with Jamaica, in particular in the field of medicine. Jamaica’s support for the removal of US sanctions against Cuba was also reiterated as not only is it unjust, but it has the effect of hampering efforts to deepen the engagement between Jamaica and Cuba.

Almost one hundred persons were in attendance, comprising the Diplomatic Corps, representatives of Offices of International Organizations, other Government offices and Jamaican nationals.

Church Service

On Sunday, 6th August, the Ambassador and Counsellor attended a Church Service organized by the International Christian Community, the only English Speaking Church in Havana, in honour of Jamaica’s 61st Anniversary of Independence.  The Ambassador thanked the organizers for the opportunity to share in this service, and the special recognition given to Jamaica as it celebrated this milestone.
