Johnson Smith says Ratification of EU-LAC Foundation Provides for Deeper Engagement with Europe

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith says Jamaica’s ratification of the European Union-Latin American Foundation Agreement, signals the country’s interest in bolstering increased cooperation with the EU.

The foundation aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between the EU, Latin America and the Caribbean.

The EU-LAC offers training geared towards capacity-building in the areas of science and research, technology and innovation, the world drug problem, migration, gender, corruption, as well as social and environmental investments for sustainable development.

Minister Johnson Smith noted that, “Jamaica’s ratification attests to our ongoing commitment to this important bi-regional partnership.”

On Monday, March 2, Jamaica became the 36th member and the 18th State of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States to ratify the Constitutive Agreement. Following the entry into force of this Agreement in May 2019, the foundation now operates as an international organisation thereby allowing it to effectively implement multi-annual programming, as well as to increase its scope of work.
