The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade deeply regrets the passing of Kofi Annan, the first black African to lead the United Nations. Mr. Annan passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 18 at the age of 80 after a short illness.
Mr Annan led a distinguished career as head of the United Nations. He was an ardent champion of peace and human rights and will be greatly missed.
“It is with deep sadness that I received news of Mr. Annan’s passing” said the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith. She noted that Mr. Annan had significantly contributed to the development of the United Nations through his unwavering dedication to service.
Johnson Smith further stated, “Jamaica joins the world in mourning the loss of this great and humble world leader. He was a true champion of women’s empowerment and made significant strides in global initiatives to protect and promote not only women’s rights, but human rights as a whole.
She added, “We extend sincere condolences to the Government and people of Ghana, even as our prayers are with his family as they grapple with his loss. We hope they will be comforted by memories of his great contributions to the world.”
