Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will lead Jamaica’s delegation to the Group of Twenty (G20) Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting in Mar del Plata, Argentina on Friday, September 14.

This will be the first of a series of high-level meetings focused on developing policy guidelines for G20 Members in the areas of international trade and investment. The outcomes from these meetings will inform decisions taken at the upcoming G20 Leaders Summit which is slated for November 30 –December 1.

Issues to be discussed at the ministerial meeting includes; Agro-Food Global Value Chains, the New Industrial Revolution (NIR) as well as the reform and strengthening of the multilateral trading system, in line with current trade developments.

“As the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM’s) representative to the Group of 20, Jamaica’s presence is crucial, as trade and investment, along with climate sustainability and energy transition are considered three areas of critical importance to CARICOM. Importantly too, we will be seeking to identify the root causes of and potential solutions for the current trade imbalance,” explained Minister Johnson Smith.

The G20, a forum constituting 19 individual countries, their central bank governors and the European Union, contributes 80 percent of the world trade, 85 percent of the world’s gross domestic product and has as its primary focus the promotion of policy aimed at international financial stability.

On Thursday August 13, Johnson Smith also participated in a high-level panel discussion on Knowledge-Based Services as Enablers of Productive and Export Diversification at the combined meetings of the 3rd Global Services Forum and the 7th Latin American Network for Research on Services (REDLAS) Conference in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event is jointly organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), and the Government of Argentina.
