Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith is urging members living in Diaspora to participate in nominating qualified candidates to be a part of the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council.
In emphasizing the importance of this electoral process, Johnson Smith noted that, “As a Jamaican in the Diaspora, it is your right to participate and know who will represent your region on this Council. If you think you have the time and the inclination to serve on this body, I encourage you to offer yourself as a candidate. Take that step and look to serve your Jamaican community. Be a part of change that will enhance and expand the Jamaica-Diaspora partnership.”
Johnson Smith informed that Voter Registration has been included as a mechanism to strengthen the electoral process. “As I speak, registration is underway and remains open until November 17, 2019 – It is easy and can be done on line at www.GlobalJADiasporaCouncil.com
Voting will run for an extended period beginning November 21st and ending on December 15th.
The Minister also indicated that the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council, as an inclusive body, will now include Jamaicans from Africa; Asia and the Pacific; the Middle East; the Caribbean; Latin America and Europe, young people between the ages of 18 and 35 years as well as experts across various sectors including Education; Health and Wellness; Arts, Sports and Culture; Citizen Security; Development Issues; Faith-based Community and Commerce.
The Council will remain as an advisory and consultative body to the Minister, comprising twenty-eight members, fourteen of whom will be elected from Canada, United Kingdom and the United States of America.
