“Let us preserve and protect it” was the call to action message for Pearnel Charles Jr, State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on World Oceans Day.
World Oceans Day 2018 which is being recognised under the theme “Clean our Ocean,” is commemorated annually to unite the world’s population in the sustainable management of the world’s oceans.
In a message by the State Minister, he noted that World Oceans Day “represents a call for action and a poignant reminder that the protection of our oceans is a shared responsibility involving government, the private sector and civil society.“
In this connection, Minister Charles Jr. revealed the Government’s plan to embark on an active programme over the next three years to enhance the productivity and sustainability of the fishing industry.
Minister Charles encouraged the preservation of the marine, and reminded Jamaicans that “we all have a responsibility to ensure that the coastal environment and the ocean around us are carefully nurtured and protected for future generations.”
The State Minister admonishes Jamaica’s commitment to the advancement of the oceans, which he said “has the potential to make a significant contribution to the attainment of four sustainable development goals.”
World Oceans Day was declared in 2008 and has since catalyzed action worldwide. June 8th marked its celebration during the United Nations Conference. The conference was convened to support the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which is to “Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
