Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, is leading the Jamaican delegation to the 19th Meeting of CARICOM’s Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), scheduled for May 9-10 in Kingstown, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The meeting will discuss the follow up to the recently concluded CARICOM-USA Energy Summit, CARICOM-Cuba relations, as well as CARICOM-EU cooperation in the context of a possible UK exit from the EU. Other issues on the agenda are: Sustainable development, including the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda and climate change issues; reparatory justice and the International Decade of People of African Descent, as well as cooperation and relations with third states, including Mexico and the UK.
“The COFCOR meetings serve as the main platform for CARICOM Foreign Ministers to strengthen the region’s foreign policy coordination and to harmonize positions on regional and international issues of common interest. It is therefore vital for Jamaica’s voice to be heard and for our positions to be advanced. I also expect to continue the immigration-related discussions with my counterpart Minister from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago”, noted Minister Johnson Smith.
Minister Johnson Smith left the island on Saturday.
