Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will be attending the Inter-American Development Bank’s (IDB) Regional Policy Dialogue from 31st October to 1st November 2017 in Washington D.C.
The Regional Policy Dialogue (RPD) will bring together Government representatives, high-level experts and private sector leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) to analyse issues in relation to the theme, “Trade in the Digital Age: Policy Implications and Business Opportunities”.
In commenting on the upcoming event, Minister Johnson Smith expressed appreciation to the IDB for having invited her to participate in the Dialogue, stating, “As we continue to work towards achieving our growth targets, I welcome the opportunity for high level policy engagement with political and business leaders from Latin America and the Caribbean as well as the opportunity to reaffirm Jamaica’s strategic objectives in relation to trade, investment and business development.”
Among the issues for discussion are: the opportunities for regional and global integration within the current globalized environment; the digital economy and e-commerce and their impact on development within the LAC region; the role of trade facilitation as a crucial element for regional economic growth; and the policies to promote the development of regional and global value chains.
The meeting will also consider the roadmap to the 11th WTO Ministerial Conference, which will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December 2017 and the CEO Summit of the Americas to be held in Lima, Peru, in 2018.
Minister Johnson Smith will return to the Island on 2nd November 2017.
