As the Government of Jamaica Continues To Deepen Its Engagement with its Diaspora, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade departs the island this weekend to participate in the Jamaica Diaspora Southern USA Summit to be held in Orlando, Florida on June 25th.
Under the theme, Providing a Road Map to Power and Influence, the Summit is expected to attract strong support from Jamaicans in the Southern USA and is being spearheaded by the Jamaican Diaspora Advisory Board Member for Southern USA, Mr. Wayne Golding Sr. Esq. and his team.
“This Summit provides a valuable opportunity to create new paradigms in the Homeland–Diaspora partnership. I look forward to meeting with the Jamaicans in that region and to discussing their views on the path to optimizing capacities of the Diaspora in media, government services, academia, business, philanthropy, and other critical areas geared at forging more economic opportunities for our people,” says Minister Johnson Smith.
The Jamaican community in the southern region, which represents the second largest Diaspora population in the USA, actively participates in the development of their local communities and Jamaica.
The Minister will expand on the topic, Effective Diaspora Partnership between the Government of Jamaica, the Private Sector – Protocols and Mechanisms in Plenary III, which will examine the way forward in maximising Diaspora engagement with Ministries, Departments and Agencies and the Private Sector in Jamaica, in addition to highlighting the most appropriate mechanisms for facilitating the transfer of Diaspora skills and resources to Jamaica.
Minister Johnson Smith culminates the day’s activities as the Keynote speaker at the Awards Gala where a number of prominent Jamaicans will be honoured.
