The global community is once again faced with a barbaric assault on innocent civilians caused by the dastardly acts of terrorist elements. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Belgium as they seek to come to terms with this tragedy.
The Government and people of Jamaica convey deepest sympathy to the Government and people of Belgium, now facing the aftermath of two cruel and deadly bomb attacks – the first which struck the Brussels National Airport at around 8:a.m. this morning and the second, following shortly after within the city’s metro system in close proximity to the European Union Headquarters.
Jamaica strongly condemns any act of terror and supports the efforts of the United Nations system to combat terrorism in accordance with international law. In this context, we underscore the need to address the root causes of this scourge.
I have conveyed my personal sympathy and that of the Jamaican government and people to His Excellency Mr. Guy Servin, Ambassador of Belgium to Jamaica, assuring him of Jamaica’s continued solidarity with the people of Belgium – a democratic nation which believes in the provision of a safe, secure and peaceful environment for all.
I have also spoken with Jamaica’s Ambassador to Belgium, Her Excellency Ms. Vilma McNish, who has confirmed that all staff members and the two Jamaican students in Belgium are safe. A circular email has been sent to Jamaicans residing in Belgium, advising them to remain calm and to be vigilant, also offering assistance with contacting their loved ones in Jamaica, if necessary.
The number of Jamaicans resident in Belgium is estimated at 400, the majority of whom are Belgian citizens. Of this number, between 100 and 150 live in Brussels. The Embassy in Brussels is unaware of any Jamaican tourists in Brussels at the moment.
