In a referendum held in June 2016, the people of Britain voted to leave the EU. On 29th March 2017, the UK Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Theresa May, sent a letter to the President of the European Commission invoking Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty to commence the two-year period during which the terms of the UK’s withdrawal will be negotiated. This withdrawal could mean that the UK will no longer be a party to the Agreements between the ACP and the EU, including the CARIFORUM / EU EPA. Talks have already commenced with the UK to ensure that preferential access to its market is retained for the countries of the Caribbean, including Jamaica.
In 2017, the Commonwealth Secretariat published a Trade Competitiveness Briefing Paper entitled Brexit: Challenges and opportunities for Jamaica and other CARIFORUM countries.
