Senator the Hon. Arnold J. Nicholson, QC, Minister of Foreign Affairs & Foreign Trade, received A Courtesy Call from Ambassador Roberto Azevêdo, Director General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) today (Monday, January 18) at the Ministry’s New Kingston offices.[button] Link text[/button]
Minister Nicholson welcomed Ambassador Azevêdo to Jamaica, expressing Jamaica’s continued interest in the multilateral trading system.
During discussions, the Minister commended the Director General on his leadership at the recently concluded 10th session of the WTO Ministerial Conference (MC10) in Nairobi, Kenya. Ambassador Azevêdo, in turn, congratulated Senator Nicholson on his work as Chair of the CARICOM Group in the WTO and Facilitator of the Rules Negotiating Group.
Ambassador Azevêdo, who is in Jamaica for 2 days, will use this opportunity to meet with various stakeholders to determine the role of the WTO in facilitating Jamaica’s further integration into a continuously evolving global economy.
The Director General is expected to tour the Kingston Container Terminal, as well as meet with the Prime Minister, other senior Government officials and private sector organisations.
Ambassador Azevêdo departs tomorrow (Tuesday) for Barbados.
The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only international organization dealing with the global rules of trade between nations. Its main function is to ensure that trade flows as smoothly, predictably and freely as possible.
