US/Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act 2016

The United States legislature adopted H.R 4939 – the US/Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act – on 16 December 2016. The Act, which establishes the platform for future US/Caribbean relations, calls for a Multi-year Strategy to increase Security, Prosperity and Well-being for the people of the United States and the Caribbean. In the area of trade (i.e. prosperity), the Act calls on the US State Department to submit to Congress a multi-year strategy that inter alia“ assists Caribbean countries in diversifying their economies, reducing free trade and investment barriers and supporting the training and employment of persons in marginalised communities”.  Note that this Initiative also includes the Dominican Republic.
