Johnson Smith describes Jamaica’s adoption of the Montego Bay Convention as “our most significant contribution to multilateralism

Caption: “Jamaica’s historical role in the development and adoption of the Montego Bay Convention ranks among our proudest and most significant contribution to multilateralism after our independence. The adoption of the Montego Bay Convention in Dec. 1982 represented the culmination of years of tireless efforts to ensure that the Convention’s underlying legal principles and norms were based on scientific knowledge, the precautionary approach, and were fit-for-purpose in preventing harmful effects on the marine environment and deep-sea ecosystems that might result from any exploration and exploitation of the resources of the Area.”- Foreign Minister, Sen. The Hon Kamina Johnson Smith at the reception to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (The Montego Bay Convention) – #UNCLOS @ Kingston Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Downtown Kingston. (August 3)

The Minister shared that “the work of the International Seabed Authority (#ISA), throughout the 27th session of the Authority and beyond, must continue to deliver on the legacy of our forbearers and remain true to the spirit in which the Convention was developed- that is, with care and a deep commitment to protecting the deep-sea marine environment and its ecosystems.”
