The Sixth Jamaica-Canada Bilateral Consultations will take place on Wednesday, March 7 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade’s New Kingston offices.
The Bilateral Consultations constitute the principal mechanism for the promotion of high-level contacts and facilitate dialogue between Jamaica and Canada on matters of mutual interest. The Sixth round will provide an opportunity for the two countries to review ongoing cooperation activities as well as examine possible new areas for technical and economic cooperation.
Projects under discussion include Security and Defence Cooperation; the Justice Undertaking for Social Transformation (JUST) programme; the Citizen Security and Justice programme (CSJP) and the Climate Change and Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management programme. In addition, the strengthening of cooperation in the areas of energy, trade and investment, infrastructure, sports and culture, as well as the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Programme (SAWP) will be explored.
Regional and hemispheric matters such as recent developments in CARICOM, including Jamaica’s Chairmanship, the Organisation of American States, the Summit of the Americas and the situation in Venezuela will also form a part of the bilateral exchange.
The Canadian delegation will be led by Mr. Martin Benjamin, Assistant Deputy Minister for the Americas, Global Affairs Canada while the Jamaican delegation will be led by Ambassador Marcia Gilbert-Roberts, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and includes Jamaica’s High Commissioner to Canada, Her Excellency Janice Miller. The Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will open the session.
Canada is a major source of overseas development assistance to Jamaica, an active investment partner, and the second largest market for tourist arrivals.
The last Jamaica-Canada Bilateral Consultations took place in Canada in 2015.
