China hosts Symposium to commemorate 50 years of Diplomatic Relations with Jamaica

Caption: Jamaica and China celebrate 50 years of Diplomatic Relations with year. To commemorate the achievements of the China-Jamaica relation, a symposium was held on Friday, October 14.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith who addressed the event, highlighted the technical and economic cooperation between the countries as one such accomplishment, noting that China is one of Jamaica’s largest bilateral partners in terms of programmes and projects.

She noted China’s significant support for infrastructural development (particularly under the Belt and Road Initiative- to expand road networks), the construction of the Foreign Ministry and the handing over of the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies as tangible outcomes of the partnership.

The Minister expressed the hope for more enhanced cooperation in health and wellness, highlighting the successful partnership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Expansion of trade and investment, human capacity-building, the high-level exchanges, partnership between the countries at the regional and multilateral level were also highlighted as other notable outcomes of the partnership.
