Jamaica Welcomes Visit of German Minister of State Serap Güler

KINGSTON, Jamaica: The Government of Jamaica today welcomed the visit of the Honourable Serap Güler, Minister of State of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, as both countries reaffirm their longstanding friendship and commitment to deeper cooperation.

The visit follows discussions aimed at expanding bilateral engagement in areas of mutual interest, including the digitisation of the economy, climate change resilience, renewable energy, management of natural resources, trade and investment.

“We warmly welcome Minister Güler’s visit, and we view it is a clear demonstration of Germany’s commitment to strengthening its direct engagement with Jamaica. For more than six decades, our countries have built a relationship grounded in mutual respect, shared democratic values and a common commitment to peace, security and sustainable development. We are particularly grateful for Germany’s generous and timely assistance following Hurricane Melissa, which brought comfort and hope to some of our most affected communities. As we move from relief to recovery and reconstruction, we look forward to working even more closely with Germany to build a stronger, more resilient future, while also creating new opportunities for our people through innovation, investment and cultural exchange,” says Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.

Foreign Minister Johnson Smith says Jamaica views the visit as an important opportunity to explore new avenues of cooperation and to strengthen existing ties in ways that are practical, forward-looking and responsive to the needs of both countries.

Quick Facts

Jamaica and Germany established diplomatic relations in 1962. Since then, the two countries have maintained a steady partnership grounded in shared democratic values, mutual respect and cooperation on issues of bilateral and global importance.

Germany has been a valued development and humanitarian partner to Jamaica. Following the passage of Hurricane Melissa, Germany provided more than 30 tonnes of emergency relief supplies, including essential equipment and medical items, to support immediate response efforts in affected communities.

People-to-people and cultural ties remain an important part of the Jamaica-Germany relationship. German language learning is supported in Jamaica through institutions including the Jamaican German Society, Wolmer’s Boys’ School and The University of the West Indies, Mona, helping to strengthen cultural exchange and mutual understanding between both countries.
