Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, joined Emina Tudakovic, Canadian High Commissioner at the Jamaica Pegasus last evening, to commemorate the remarkable achievements of women’s groups across Jamaica.

As Jamaica’s first woman foreign minister, Senator Johnson Smith had the pleasure of delivering the Keynote address at the Canada Gender Equality Awards, representing both the Government of Jamaica and Minister of Gender, Culture and Sports, Hon. Olivia Grange.

Awards were presented in 14 categories spanning key aspects of gender equality education, climate change and economic empowerment to gender-based violence prevention, diversity and inclusion, ensuring all facets of gender equality efforts are acknowledged and celebrated.

At the end of the Awards Ceremony, Minister Johnson Smith had the privilege of accepting the Canada-Jamaica Partnership Award on behalf of the Government’s Bureau of Gender Affairs.

Canada has maintained a long-standing and strategically significant bilateral partnership with Jamaica, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation across a range of critical areas, including gender-based violence, security and justice.

To the remarkable extent of $1.1 billion, in 2022 the Canadian Government initiated programmes throughout Jamaica aimed at addressing gender-based violence (GBV), improving sexual and reproductive health, and advancing human rights.
