The Government of Jamaica today confirmed funding of 15M Euros under the Sugar Accompanying Measures and 20M Euros for Citizen Security with the European Union during a bilateral meeting in Brussels, Belgium.
Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith and Director-General for Development and International Cooperation, Stefano Manservisi, inked the deals and welcomed the decision taken by the European Commission to disburse the second variable tranche of the Accompanying Measures for Sugar Protocol Countries for Jamaica. This follows discussions on the progress of the reforms in the area of transitioning of sugar dependent areas in Jamaica.
In the area of Citizens Security, the grant funding will be a big boost to supporting the implementation of the newly adopted National Security Policy for Jamaica. The intervention will support the National Security Policy for Jamaica (NSP) and other strategies for increasing citizen security in the country.
Minister Johnson Smith said,” One must appreciate the value of the EU’s role as the largest provider of grant funding to several Caribbean countries under the European Development Fund (EDF). In Jamaica’s case
for example, EU assistance has been particularly helpful with respect to public financial management, citizen security and justice reform, programmes in education, agriculture and rural development, as well as private sector development, all of which support economic growth.”
