Johnson Smith to welcome Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira for bilateral talks
Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade is set to welcome the Foreign Minister of the Federative Republic of Brazil, His Excellency Mauro Vieira, to
Jamaica later today (January 22).
The visit of the Brazilian Foreign Minister is aimed at strengthening ties forged over six decades of
diplomatic relations, as well as furthering preparations for enhanced technical cooperation ahead of the second staging of the Jamaica-Brazil Joint Commission, to be hosted by Brazil.
“Jamaica is honoured to host Foreign Minister Vieira as we explore new dimensions of our bilateral
partnership. Over the years, our nations have demonstrated the value of collaboration, and this visit
is an opportunity for us to deepen our work in areas of mutual interest that directly impact the lives
of our people, while ensuring shared progress for sustainable development”, Senator Johnson Smith
said.
The visit of Brazil’s top diplomat follows a series of high-level engagements, the most recent having been during the High-level segment of the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. Early last year, Minister Johnson Smith also attended a Pledging Conference in Brazil on the margins of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting, during Brazil’s Presidency. The event mobilised support for the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) to Haiti, an initiative designed to help restore stability, secure critical infrastructure and advance economic recovery in Haiti.
Since establishing formal ties in 1962, Jamaica and Brazil have worked together to promote sustainable development across several fields, including education, health and tourism. The Ministers’ meeting will address these and other bilateral issues, as well as regional and multilateral issues. During his visit, Minister Vieira will also engage more widely with Ministers of government and other officials.
