MEXICO AND JAMAICA HOLD THE 10TH MEETING OF THE PERMANENT BINATIONAL COMMISSION

As proof of the priority that the Government of Mexico gives to its foreign policy with Latin American and Caribbean countries, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and Jamaica held the 10th Meeting of the Permanent Binational Commission, on Tuesday, 25th April 2023, in virtual format.

 The meeting took place in a spirit of friendship, understanding and collaboration and was led by Mr. Maximiliano Reyes Zúñiga, Under Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico, and Ambassador Janice Miller, Under Secretary for Bilateral, Regional and Hemispheric Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica.

Since its establishment in 1993, the Binational Commission has been a dynamic instrument for both countries to strengthen their traditional friendship, trade, investment and cooperation opportunities to further  the diplomatic relations that were formalized in in 1966..

During the opening ceremony, Under Secretary Reyes Zúñiga highlighted the strength of the bilateral relations and the significant developments in this regard; highlighting the economic-commercial, and cultural exchange and support provided to respond to the challenges also being   faced at the multilateral and regional levels. This was echoed by Ambassador Miller, who also reiterated the appreciation of the Government and people of Jamaica to the Government and people of Mexico for the continued assistance towards Jamaica’s sustainable developmental efforts in several critical areas.

The delegations reiterated their governments’ interests in continuing to promote initiatives to combat the illicit traffic in arms, which fuels transnational organized crime and creates a public health issue. They agreed on the importance of strengthening bilateral, regional and international cooperation to continue addressing this phenomenon and reducing armed violence in their territories.

Officials reaffirmed the strategic importance of coordination and cooperation between Mexico and Jamaica to support their shared agenda, to continue strengthening bilateral economic, commercial and cultural ties, to promote contact between their peoples, and to strengthen mutual understanding in emerging issues in different international fora.

The officials also acknowledged that this Commission represented an opportunity to catalyze joint actions, advance cooperation programmes and promote the coordination of issues of mutual interest. Both delegations agreed to convene the XI Permanent Binational Commission in the framework of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Jamaica and Mexico, which will be celebrated in March 2026.
