Minister Johnson Smith and team meet with Mr. Seko Hiroshige and representatives from the House of Councillors of Japan

Caption: During a bilateral meeting with a team from the House of Councillors of Japan, led by Mr. Seko Hiroshige, Sen. the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and leader of Government Business in the Senate, stated that, on development issues, “both countries are of the same mind, with Japan always sensitive to issues of Small Island Developing States (SIDS). As current leader of the Group of 7 within the United Nations (UN), your voice is a powerful one that understands the nuances of SIDS and Jamaica is grateful that Japan is our friend.”

 

The Minister also said that as a result of “Jamaica’s economic stability and fiscal prudence, the country anticipates an increase in Japanese investment in local industries, here.”

Mr. Seko stated the similarities between the countries, in particular the shared vulnerability of both countries electricity network, for example. He also agreed that there is room for increased investment.

The dignitaries also discussed the situation in Haiti, in particular, the immediate provision of humanitarian necessities.
