STATE MINISTER TERRELONGE TO STRENGTHEN DIASPORA ENGAGEMENT AND HONOR WINDRUSH LEGACY IN THE UK

The Honourable Alando Terrelonge, MP, State Minister at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, is set to embark upon his first visit to the UK since his recent assignment as Minister with responsibility for Diaspora Affairs. This highly anticipated visit, scheduled to take place from 21st to 24th June, will serve as a powerful testament to the Jamaican government’s unwavering commitment to fostering strong ties with the Jamaican Diaspora and to paying tribute to the monumental Windrush 75 Anniversary.

Minister Terrelonge’s visit comes at a crucial time as the Jamaican Diaspora in the UK stages its first in-person Regional Conference since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the theme, “Legacy Beyond Jamaica,” the Conference on Saturday, 24th June, will provide a platform for the Diaspora to gather and forge connections that transcend borders.

In addition to the Regional Conference, Minister Terrelonge will be actively involved in commemorating the Windrush 75 Anniversary. His itinerary includes an act of remembrance, as he lays a floral tribute at the revered African and Caribbean War Memorial in Windrush Square. He will deliver a Keynote address at the Windrush Day event on Thursday, June 22, honouring the indelible contributions of the Windrush generation.

Minister Terrelonge expressed his profound belief that “this visit will set a resolute tone of continuity and unwavering dedication, in the Government of Jamaica’s ongoing efforts to engage with the Diaspora.” Recognizing the importance of the Jamaican community’s welfare in their host country, he further emphasized that the visit exemplifies the GoJ’s commitment to nurturing a strong and enduring bond with its Diaspora.

“Building upon the momentum generated by Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, in her visit with the UK Diaspora in March, as well as that of my predecessor Leslie Campbell, my presence will ensure a seamless transition. I look forward to working the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council (GJDC) and the Global Jamaica Diaspora Youth Council (GJDYC) as they embark on their second three-year term to strengthen engagement. This visit will reinforce the GoJ’s steadfast dedication to the Diaspora and its resolute mission of implementing the National Diaspora Policy and Action Plan.” He said.
