Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator the Honourable Kamina Johnson Smith welcomed the US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo who arrived in Jamaica on Tuesday, January 21 for a two day working visit.
Whilst in Jamaica, Prime Minister Andrew Holness and his senior Cabinet Ministers will hold bilateral talks with Secretary Pompeo. He will also deliver a policy on the Caribbean region’s critical importance to the US , and the country’s renewed commitment to closer ties, based on shared values, interests and economic prosperity.
Minister Johnson Smith, Permanent Secretary Gilbert Roberts and Jamaican Ambassador to the US, Mrs. Audrey Marks were amongst those seated at the table during the Jamaica-USA bilateral meeting at OPM on Wednesday, January 22.
During the Press Conference that followed, both Prime Minister Holness and the US Secretary of State, Mr. Michael Pompeo reiterated their mutual commitment to cooperation on issues of regional security, including climate resilience.
In addressing the Press Conference, Secretary of State Pompeo referenced Jamaica’s leadership in the region. At the same time, PM Holness in acknowledging that the US is Jamaica’s largest trading and security partner, stated that the country’s interest is to unite the region, for among other things, peace and prosperity.
