Presentation of Credentials-Belgium

Mr. Hugo Verbist, Ambassador-designate of Belgium to Jamaica, who was most recently Ambassador to Uganda and South-Sudan, presented his Copy Letters of Credence today to Minister Johnson Smith.

On the bilateral front, the officials discussed increased cooperation on logistics, with Mr. Verbist expressing Belgium’s interest in collaborating on Jamaica’s port expansion and Minister Johnson Smith noting “the numerous opportunities for cultural collaboration.”

Multilaterally, the discussions centered on the CARICOM/European Union  relations, with specific focus on the Post Cotonou context.

Celebratory facts on Jamaica/Belgium relations

  • 2019 is the 40th Anniversary year, marking the donation of the two murals by Belgian Artist Claude Rahir to the University of the West Indies, (UWI), Mona
  • Both countries established diplomatic relations on July 25, 1967
